Our roots run deep.
Hoover’s Hatchery began in the summer of 1944 when Bob and Helen Hoover took over a small hatchery in Rudd, Iowa. They hatched and sold baby chicks until their retirement in the early 1970s, when longtime employees Doug and Mary Halsted took the lead. The Halsteds went on to own and operate Hoover’s for 47 years.
Today, Hoover’s is owned and operated by a group of families who carry forward the care, hard work, and ingenuity that shaped the Hoover, Halsted, Moyer, and Privett hatcheries. We’ve grown, but those roots still guide how we care for our birds and the people who raise them.
Four hatcheries. More ways to support your flock.
In 2020, Moyer’s Chicks in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, joined the Hoover’s family. Today, Moyer’s Ready-to-Lay Pullets helps keepers across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast get a head start with young hens approaching laying age. With the brooding and early growing stages already handled, keepers can focus on welcoming their birds home and looking forward to their first eggs.
Privett Hatchery joined Hoover’s in 2023, bringing a long history of poultry breeding and a selection of rare and uncommon birds. For keepers interested in trying a different breed or adding variety to their flock, Privett offers more to discover.
Estes Hatchery in Mount Vernon, Missouri, is the newest addition to the Hoover’s family, extending our reach and adding to the experience we share.
Together, our four hatcheries bring more than 300 years of combined experience to backyards and farmsteads across the country. That means more knowledge to draw from, more birds to choose from, and dependable support as your flock grows.
